V2G Technology
What is Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)?
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology enables electric vehicles (EVs) not only to receive energy from the grid but also to return surplus energy back to it. This innovative, bidirectional charging transforms EVs into mobile energy storage systems, actively contributing to grid stability, energy efficiency, and the integration of renewable energy sources.
How Does V2G Technology Work?
Traditional EV charging is unidirectional, meaning energy flows solely from the grid into the vehicle. With V2G technology, charging becomes bidirectional—allowing vehicles to return excess electricity to the grid during peak times or when renewable energy generation is low. This creates a dynamic, flexible energy storage network that supports grid balance and resilience.
Vehicle-to-Grid technology is not a mere innovation; it is the future of energy and mobility.
The proven potential
Key benefits of V2G Technology
Enhanced Grid Stability
Optimized Renewable Energy Use
Economic Benefits for Users
Resiliency and Backup Power
In emergencies or power outages, V2G-enabled vehicles can serve as mobile backup power sources for homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. This replaces often used “peaker plants” that run mainly on diesel generators.
Lowered Infrastructure Costs
The future is bidirectional
Why We Believe V2G is the Future
The global transition towards renewable energy and electrification requires smarter energy solutions.
V2G can support the grid in managing the imbalances associated with clean energy generation. When many V2G cars are connected to the grid, they function together as a large, flexible power plant, providing essential support to balance a sustainable energy grid.
As more renewable energy sources come online, the need for flexible energy storage and distribution becomes crucial—V2G offers exactly this, providing both mobility and energy solutions in one integrated system.
We Drive Solar’s V2G Milestones

Real-world impact, proven performance
Europe's First Large-Scale V2G Car-Sharing Program
In partnership with Renault Group, MyWheels, and the City of Utrecht, we introduced Europe’s largest V2G-enabled car-sharing fleet. This groundbreaking project features 500 Renault electric vehicles equipped with advanced V2G technology, supporting Utrecht’s ambitious sustainability targets.
Implementation of this project started in April 2025 when 50 V2G Renault 5’s and 60 V2G chargers of WeDriveSolar were installed in Utrecht. The remaining 450 V2G cars and chargers will be installed during the remainder of 2025.

Real-world impact, proven performance
Utrecht – The world’s first bidirectional region
We collaborated with the City of Utrecht, grid operator Stedin, MyWheels and Renault to transform Utrecht into the first bidirectional region worldwide. Hundreds of V2G chargers now actively support local grid management, renewable integration, and energy resilience.
